What Ollama does well

  • Ollama is open source under the MIT license, so anyone can read and fork its code.
  • It runs on Linux and Windows as well as macOS.
  • It deploys as a headless server, in Docker or behind a load balancer.
  • Over 67,000 integrations speak its API, as reported with its July 2026 Series B.

Switching from Ollama

  1. 01

    Install ToolPiper

Free, with no account. It runs on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 26 or later.

  2. 02

    Adopt your models

ToolPiper finds your Ollama library and asks once to adopt it. Each GGUF model is hardlinked into its own store, so nothing is copied or downloaded again.

  3. 03

    Keep your apps

Apps that talk to Ollama keep working. ToolPiper answers the Ollama API on port 11434 when that port is free.

What comes with you

Your models
One click adopts every GGUF model in your Ollama library. ToolPiper never writes into Ollama's folder, and the adopted models keep working if you remove Ollama later.
Chat templates
A model's chat template travels inside its GGUF file, so an adopted model answers in the format it was built for.
Your cloud setting
If you turned Ollama's cloud off, ToolPiper reads that choice and offers to match it, so its own pickers stop offering cloud providers. Settings reverts it in one click.
Models from other tools
The same one-click adoption reads LM Studio, Jan and the Hugging Face cache, so models you downloaded elsewhere on this Mac come along too.

Keep your apps working

How an app that used Ollama reaches ToolPiper
Your appWhat to do
Has Ollama's port 11434 built in

Change nothing

ToolPiper answers the Ollama API on 127.0.0.1:11434 whenever that port is free, so quit Ollama and open ToolPiper. Verified with the Ollama CLI, the official ollama-python and OpenAI SDKs, and Hollama.

Lets you set the Ollama server URL and an API key

Change one URL

http://127.0.0.1:9998/legacy/ollama

The same Ollama API on ToolPiper's own port, so it answers while Ollama is still running. Use a free ToolPiper token as the API key, created under Security in the app.

Speaks the OpenAI API

Change one URL

http://127.0.0.1:9998/v1

ToolPiper's local API speaks the OpenAI format. Use a free ToolPiper token as the API key, created under Security in the app.

Is Zed or Continue

Let ToolPiper add itself

ToolPiper offers to add itself as a provider beside your Ollama entry. It shows the exact change first, leaves your entry as it is, and removes its own in one click.

Reads the OLLAMA_HOST variable

Let ToolPiper set it

The Ollama CLI and ollama-python follow this variable. ToolPiper offers to set it in your shell profile, shows the exact lines first, and removes them in one click.

Should keep using Ollama too

Run both

ToolPiper serves on its own port and keeps its own model store, so the two run side by side.

Common questions

Is Ollama free?

Yes, for running models on your own hardware, which Ollama's pricing page calls always unlimited. Its paid plans buy cloud usage instead: Pro is $20/mo or $200/yr, Max is $100/mo and Team is $500/mo, as published on 2026-10-09.

Is ToolPiper free?

Yes. The whole runner is free with no account and no caps: the llama.cpp engine, unlimited model downloads, the local OpenAI-compatible API, all speech and the MCP host. Paid plans start at $10/mo with Pro, which adds browser automation, files and Git, and RAG over your files.

Is ToolPiper faster than Ollama?

Neither is faster. In our June 2026 benchmark on an M2 Max, the same GGUF files ran within single digits of each other in both directions, and the winner flipped by model. Choose on setup, files, speech and tools, not tokens per second.

Will apps built for Ollama work with ToolPiper?

Yes. ToolPiper answers the Ollama API on port 11434 when that port is free, loopback-only, and it is verified with the Ollama CLI, the official ollama-python and OpenAI SDKs, and Hollama. Modelfile operations are the exception: ToolPiper rejects them with guidance that points at its own API.

Can I keep my Ollama models?

Yes. ToolPiper reads Ollama's library, asks once to adopt it, and hardlinks each model's GGUF weights into its own store under a real name. No bytes are copied, nothing is written into Ollama's folder, and the adopted models keep working if you remove Ollama later. It adopts GGUF weights only.
