What LM Studio does well

  • Its model search matches models to your Mac's memory, and its lmstudio-community page on Hugging Face publishes 750 quantized models.
  • Two inference engines, llama.cpp and MLX, with continuous batching and speculative decoding.
  • It runs on Windows and Linux as well as the Mac, and the same core runs headless as the llmster daemon.
  • Their cloud and web search run under a stated zero data retention policy, with no training on your data.

Switching from LM Studio

  1. 01

    Install ToolPiper

Free, with no account. It runs on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 26 or later.

  2. 02

    Adopt your models

ToolPiper finds LM Studio's models folder, even if you moved it, and asks once to adopt it. Each GGUF is hardlinked into its own store, so nothing is copied or downloaded again.

  3. 03

    Point your apps at it

Apps that use LM Studio's OpenAI-compatible server work with ToolPiper's local OpenAI-compatible API.

What comes with you

Your models
One click adopts the GGUF models in LM Studio's models folder. ToolPiper never writes into that folder, and the adopted models keep working if you remove LM Studio later.
Chat templates
A model's chat template travels inside its GGUF file, so an adopted model answers in the format it was built for.
Models from other tools
The same one-click adoption reads Ollama, Jan and the Hugging Face cache, so models you downloaded elsewhere on this Mac come along too.

Common questions

Is LM Studio free?

Yes, for running models on your own Mac, at home and at work. Its paid plans buy cloud usage instead: Bionic+ is $20 a month and Pro is $100 a month, as published on 2026-10-09.

Is ToolPiper free?

Yes. The whole runner is free with no account and no caps: the llama.cpp engine, unlimited model downloads, the local OpenAI-compatible API, all speech and the MCP host. Paid plans start at $10/mo with Pro, which adds browser automation, files and Git, and RAG over your files.

Does LM Studio have an MCP server?

LM Studio is an MCP host: since version 0.3.17 it connects to MCP servers and uses their tools, and its Bionic app does the same. Neither documents serving tools as an MCP server. ToolPiper does both: it hosts any MCP server, and it serves its own tools to Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Can LM Studio do voice?

LM Studio's separate Bionic app transcribes offline and has a voice keyboard that dictates into any app. No speech output, voice cloning or voice chat is documented for its desktop apps. ToolPiper's free tier includes dictation, transcription, text-to-speech, voice cloning and voice chat.

Can I keep my LM Studio models?

Yes. ToolPiper finds LM Studio's models folder, asks once to adopt it, and hardlinks each GGUF into its own store. No bytes are copied, nothing is written into LM Studio's folder, and the adopted models keep working if you uninstall LM Studio later. Per-model presets stay in LM Studio.
