What Jan does well
- Jan is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 license, with its full desktop source on GitHub.
- Its analytics are opt-in: you choose at first launch, and chats and prompts are excluded.
- Projects index your files for retrieval across a project's conversations, with numbered citation cards.
- It runs on Windows and Linux as well as Apple Silicon Macs.
- Its local API speaks OpenAI, Anthropic Messages and Responses, with a settings page that makes Jan a backend for Claude Code.
Switching from Jan
01
Install ToolPiper
Free, with no account. It runs on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 26 or later.
02
Adopt your models
ToolPiper finds Jan's models folder and asks once to adopt it. Each GGUF is hardlinked into its own store, so nothing is copied or downloaded again.
03
Point your apps at it
Apps that use Jan's local API work with ToolPiper's local OpenAI-compatible API.
What comes with you
- Your models
- One click adopts the GGUF models in Jan's models folder. ToolPiper never writes into that folder, and the adopted models keep working if you remove Jan later.
- Chat templates
- A model's chat template travels inside its GGUF file, so an adopted model answers in the format it was built for.
- Models from other tools
- The same one-click adoption reads Ollama, LM Studio and the Hugging Face cache, so models you downloaded elsewhere on this Mac come along too.

Common questions
Is Jan free?
Yes. Jan is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 license, with no paid tier, as read on 2026-10-09.
Is ToolPiper free?
Yes. The whole runner is free with no account and no caps: the llama.cpp engine, unlimited model downloads, the local OpenAI-compatible API, all speech and the MCP host. Paid plans start at $10/mo with Pro, which adds browser automation, files and Git, and RAG over your files.
Does Jan have an MCP server?
Jan is an MCP host: it connects to MCP servers over STDIO, Streamable HTTP and SSE, and asks you to approve each tool call. It does not document serving its own tools to other MCP clients. ToolPiper does both: it hosts any MCP server, and it serves its own tools to Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP clients.
Can Jan do voice?
Jan's chat accepts audio files for audio-capable models. No speech output or voice chat is documented. ToolPiper's free tier includes dictation, transcription, text-to-speech, voice cloning and voice chat.
Can I keep my Jan models?
Yes. ToolPiper finds Jan's models folder, asks once to adopt it, and hardlinks each GGUF into its own store. No bytes are copied, nothing is written into Jan's folder, and the adopted models keep working if you remove Jan later.
