The first 80% of a vibe-coded project feels like magic. You describe what you want, the AI builds it, and it works. A landing page. An API integration. A tool that pulls data from one place and puts it in another. You're moving fast and the code is real.
Then something breaks. The AI tries to fix it. Makes it worse. Tries again. Starts going in circles. You're three rounds deep and the original error is still there, buried under new code that was supposed to help.
This is where most vibe-coded projects die. Not because the problem is hard. Because the AI can't see what's actually wrong.
The 80/20 Wall Is a Known Pattern
AI coding assistants handle the happy path well. Standard patterns, common libraries, straightforward logic. Ask for a REST API client, you get a working REST API client. Ask for a form with validation, you get a form with validation. The code compiles, the structure is clean, and the first run usually works.
The breakdowns happen at boundaries. Two components interact in a way the AI didn't anticipate. An API returns a different response shape than the documentation suggested. A timing issue causes one part of the code to run before another part is ready. A config value is slightly wrong - a decimal point in the wrong place, a model name with a typo, an endpoint URL missing a path segment.
These bugs share a common property: they only show up at runtime. The code looks correct. The logic reads correctly. But when the program actually runs, something doesn't match, and the output is wrong or the whole thing crashes.
The AI doesn't have runtime data. It can see the code. It can read the error message in your terminal, if there is one. But it can't see what the API actually returned, what the request body actually contained, or which step in a five-step process produced the bad output. So it guesses. And guessing is what produces those circular debugging sessions where the AI rewrites the same function three times without fixing anything.
Why "Learn to Debug" Doesn't Solve This
The standard advice when vibe-coded projects break is: learn to debug. Set a breakpoint. Step through the code. Inspect the variables.
That advice assumes you know what a breakpoint is. It assumes you have a debugger installed and configured. It assumes you understand how to navigate a call stack. For people who came to coding through AI assistants - designers, product managers, domain experts, hobbyists - that's a big ask. Not because they can't learn it, but because learning to debug is a multi-week investment that doesn't solve the problem they have right now.
But traditional developers sometimes miss a key point: you don't actually need to become a debugger. You need a way to get error information to your AI assistant. The AI is perfectly capable of diagnosing bugs. It's been doing it for years on Stack Overflow questions and GitHub issues. The missing ingredient isn't the AI's diagnostic ability. It's the data.
What the AI Actually Needs
When code fails, the AI needs four things to fix it reliably:
- What error occurred (the actual error message, not a status code)
- What input caused it (the request body, the config values, the user data)
- What the external service actually returned (the full response, not a summary)
- Which step in the process failed (in a multi-step workflow, was it step 2 or step 4?)
If the AI has these four data points, it can fix almost any runtime bug on the first try. The problem has never been the AI's ability to fix code. It's been the AI's ability to see what went wrong.
A human developer gets this data by adding log statements, reading log files, and using debugging tools they've spent years learning. A vibe coder needs a way to get the same data to the AI without that years-long investment.
LogPiper as the Debugging Floor
LogPiper is a logging service built into ToolPiper. It runs automatically when ToolPiper is running. Any app, script, or AI assistant can write structured log entries to it and query them back over HTTP.
The interface is two URLs. POST http://127.0.0.1:9998/log writes an entry. GET http://127.0.0.1:9998/logs reads entries back. That's the whole API. No programming knowledge required beyond telling your AI assistant where to look.
Here's what debugging looks like with LogPiper:

No breakpoints. No stack trace reading. No debugger configuration. You told the AI where to look, and the data was already there.
For any traffic that flows through ToolPiper - local AI inference, cloud API proxy calls, MCP tool invocations - LogPiper captures request and response bodies automatically. You don't need to add logging for those. The data is in the buffer the moment the request completes.
When the API Returns Something Unexpected
The single most common vibe coding failure: the AI writes code that calls an API, and the API returns something the code doesn't handle. A different field name. A nested object where the code expected a flat string. An error response the code doesn't parse.
Without LogPiper, the AI sees your error message ("TypeError: Cannot read property 'text' of undefined") and guesses at the API response shape. It might add null checks. It might try a different parsing strategy. It might rewrite the API call entirely. Three rounds later, the problem was that the API returns content not text, and a single field name change would have fixed it in ten seconds.
With LogPiper, every API call through ToolPiper is logged with the full request and response body, truncated at 8KB. When the AI queries the logs, it sees exactly what was sent and what came back. The response has content where the code expected text. One query, one look at the actual data, one fix.
This applies to cloud API calls too. If your code talks to OpenAI, Anthropic, or Gemini through ToolPiper's proxy, the proxy logs both directions. When the cloud API returns a 422 with a validation error explaining exactly what's wrong with your request, that error message is sitting in LogPiper waiting for the AI to read it.
When Multi-Step Workflows Produce Bad Output
Vibe-coded projects often chain multiple AI calls together. Transcribe audio, then summarize the transcript, then generate an email from the summary. When the final email is incoherent, which step failed? Was the transcription wrong? Was the summary lossy? Was the email prompt bad?
Without runtime data, the AI has to guess which step to investigate. It might rewrite the email prompt when the real problem was a transcription error three steps earlier. That's wasted time and wasted tokens.
LogPiper's correlation IDs solve this. ToolPiper assigns a correlation ID to each workflow execution and logs every step with that ID. Query by the correlation ID and you see each step's input and output in sequence. The transcription was clean. The summary was clean. The email prompt had a formatting bug that injected literal newline characters instead of actual line breaks. The AI can see the exact step where the output went wrong and fix that step specifically.
Even without correlation IDs, filtering by time window or event type narrows the data fast. ?event=http&limit=20 returns the most recent HTTP interactions in order. The AI reads through them like a timeline: here's what went out, here's what came back, here's where it broke.

When something fails at runtime, check LogPiper before guessing:

What LogPiper Doesn't Help With
LogPiper handles runtime errors, failed API calls, unexpected responses, timeouts, and process crashes. Anything that produces an error or unexpected data at runtime. In our experience, this is the largest category of bugs in vibe-coded projects.
It doesn't help with visual bugs. If the button is in the wrong place or the font size is off, no log entry will tell the AI that. You still need to describe what's wrong visually, or send a screenshot.
It doesn't help with pure logic bugs that produce correct-looking but wrong results. If the code calculates a total incorrectly but doesn't error out, there's no error entry to query. For those, you need to describe the expected output and the actual output to the AI.
And it only works locally. LogPiper runs on your Mac. If your code is deployed to a server or running in CI, you'll need a different approach for those environments.
These are real limitations. But the category of bugs LogPiper does cover - things that errored out, returned unexpected data, or timed out - is the category that causes the most circular debugging sessions. When the AI can see the actual error, it stops guessing.
